6 | Turn Left, Turn Right

Keep turning left, and keep turning right. Because one day, you might just bump into your soulmate.
This is what this movie made me feel like immediately after watching it! After leaving the room where we watched the movie during our English Enrichment Program class, I immediately kept turning my head left and right with my friends because we thought that, that way, we'd finally meet our soulmate. Haha! This wasn't the case. Yet. But still, the fact that the idea lingered in my mind for a quite a long time means that the movie is just that good.

I really love how at the beginning, in a sea of black umbrellas, we see one of mint green and another of red. You can’t miss them from a distance. These establish two things immediately. Ms Red Umbrella is a beautiful girl who reads a book while waiting for the walk sign, while standing beneath her umbrella, and in the midst of a rainstorm. This is Eve Choi played by the wonderful Gigi Leung and her character is a skilled translator who works for a Taiwanese publishing firm translating European literature into Chinese. The guy beneath the green umbrella is John Liu and he’s played by the heart-throb Takeshi Kaneshiro. In the film, he plays a struggling musician, a violinist actually. Liu is a magnet and he will attract women without even trying.

As most protagonists in a plot, these two have their fair share of problems that they are facing at the start of the film. The guy is about to get fired because his music doesn't sound 'commercial', as that is what the music producer wants. He eventually quits voluntarily and leaves. He then later auditions for a job in a restaurant. As for the girl, she's getting tongue lashed by her editor because she doesn't have the translation ready. They're just perfect for each other aren't they?

Well, unfortunately, they don't seem to bump into each other at all. They're that unlucky. It's like the world is against them from meeting at all. But as the movie's tagline says, "Even parallel lines might cross paths some day."
